Celluloid is flexible, has more weight dan Acetate and will not easily deform with wear. Celluloid has a finish that is glossier than Acetate, in fact it will get more shinier when used. Developed in the second half of the 19th century as a substitute for ivory, Celluloid was one the first synthetic plastics made and used. Glasses made from Celluloid must be made by hand. A few factories in Japan still produce Celluloid, which presents an opportunity for skilled craftsmen to keep on producing these glasses.
The model that The Real McCoy’s have developed is based on the prescription glasses used by the U.S. military in the late 1950’s and 1960’s. At one time these glasses were dubbed "birth control glasses" due to their unstylish appearance. The Real McCoy’s replaced the glasses with dead-stock lenses from the 1980’s (with 80-90% UV blocking), which give them a really cool appearance.
