The duffle coat was made famous by allied commander of the British forces General Montgomery, so a lot of people in Europe and abroad also call this one a "Monty" coat. Originally it was a deck coat, the coat was very easy to wear in cold situations, as the toggles are easy to handle with gloves and also the width of the sleeves was easy to access with gloves. It as build to withstand rain and /or snow. The brushed up, shaggy wool cloth is like water repellent and the hood protects against cold wind.

Following World war II a huge inventory of surplus coats were available, so it got very popular by civilians too.

The "Lighthouse" brand was one of the manufacturers of these duffle coats.
