This tiger stripe pattern was named in honor of John Wayne's character in the Vietnam war movie “The Green Berets”. The pattern that has come to be known as John Wayne tiger stripe was first conceived as an exclusive issue item to early CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Group) and regional forces as early as 1962. The pattern was made in Japan, silkscreened on to heavy weight fabric.
John Wayne's actual Tiger suit was made from a bunch of cloth brought back from Vietnam by the US Army for this purpose and sewn by the firm "Western Costume Company”, North Hollywood, USA to the correct pattern. As John Wayne was a big man and would require a larger fitting outfit for his exploits in his role as a member of USMAAG (United States Military Assistance Advisory Group).
