The Fearnought Duffle Coat, unlike the standard Royal Navy duffle coat, features a simple design with a short length and shawl collar.
It's nickname comes from the Fearnought wool by Dugdale & Bros, which was developed for sailors in their mill in northern England in the early 18th century. Procured by the British War Office between 1941 and 1943, it was supplied to the British Army, the Allied forces, including Poland, and the Civil Defense Service, where volunteers served in roles such as air raid wardens, fire wardens, rescue workers, and ambulance crews.
Deadstock items released by the War Office after the war were also used by air force bases and mountain rescue teams, making it a versatile and highly mobile winter garment that was highly valued for a wide range of situations.
